The folk dances in Macedonia feature elegant movements, exciting rhythms and a sensibillity arising from the soul of a nation. Macedonian folk dances are characterized by a fascinating combination of tenderness, manliness, and skill, which in a highly developed rhythm of the dance make a wonderful spectacle, an exceptional show of art.
Ensemble Oteks Folk performs both authentic and stylized dances and choreographies from all over Macedonia. Their suites reflect the reach and colorful customs, festdays, gatherings and work from all of Macedonia’s varied regions including their own Lake Ohrid. The rich repertoire of our ensemble provides us opportunity to make performance more than 2 hours.
All dances and choreographies are performed with orchestra suite component of classical instruments like: Rhythm section: drum (“tapan”), guitar, and bass guitar. Solo section: accordion, clarinet, flute, and violin.
Begun in 1983, as a cultural association of the textile factory “Oteks” in Ohrid, Macedonia, ensemble “Oteks” was originally formed by the interested and talented dancers from the employee’s families. In those days the state sponsored the training and touring of this dancers enabling them to grow and increase their repertoire offering original instruments, costumes, suites of specific regional dances and revival of their customs and traditions. In the last couple of years ensemble “Oteks” is self-sponsored due to changes that have occurred.
The organization of our ensemble is as following: • Folklore school – over 150 young members • Children ensemble – (20 boys (m), 20 girls (f), 10 musicians) • Second Group – (15 m , 15 f, 10 musicians) • First Group – (25 m, 25 f, 15 musicians) Ensemble has a professional folklore school where over 150 young members.
These young members are learning our traditional folklore with professional choreographers and musicians. They are becoming part of the Children ensemble (age: up to 14) and after age of 14 they are members of the second and first group of our ensemble. Their energy, intricate footwork, colorful costumes and warm generous spirits have taken them around the world as ambassadors of Macedonian song and dance.
